here's the thing that some people just never learn. we are not teaching a fifth grade ethics class. we are here to win. win pretty, win ugly, it's still winning.

what is luck, and what is fate?

if there is a 95% chance for the success of something, most people would already readily accept this as a near certainty and gladly go ahead.

but the few of us for whom this 5% possibility of failure, this 5% uncertainty, is unacceptable-- we will aim further to eliminate uncertainty, we will allow for more variables, unforeseeable externalities, etc.

if you combine two independent methods, both with 95% probabilities for success, the mathematics is concise: you now have a 1 - (1 - .95) * (1 - .95) = 99.75% chance for success.

here we are assured. the common man was satisfied with 95%, we have achieved 99.75%.

and the 0.25% occurs.

how can a simple man, in the face of the chaotic cosmos, truly be certain of anything?

is this luck, or is this fate?

what is time? we measure it discretely with confidence -- hours, days, months, years. yet in fact, it is a continuum, an unbroken thread of existence.

and yet in reality, our memory and perception of time is discrete and indefinite. an indelible memory, occurred now years ago, recalled as if it may have been just last month. others have described memories as vivid, but this is surely a poetic lie. they are as if behind a haze, some longing for a past life, some love of which we both cannot remember the feeling but equally cannot forget.

and how quickly time passes, and how shockingly things change, and how mercilessly they stay the same.

for my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of stars makes me dream.
